Maintenance and remodeling of golf course facilities are complicated and expensive activities which are carried out on the greens, tees, bunkers and fairways in order to keep the integrity and proper functioning for the maximum user enjoyment. The golf course owners and managers are responsible for the maintenance while engineers and architects are responsible for the design and remodeling. For this they need non-destructive tools for obtaining information on features in the shallow subsurface. The most important subsurface features will vary depending on the part of the golf course in question, but may include utility, drainage, and irrigation infrastructure; soil type, compaction; and layer thickness characteristics; and attributes of the bedrock geology. Near-surface geophysical methods can provide a non-destructive means for golf course superintendents and architects to obtain the shallow subsurface information required to address their maintenance and remodeling concerns.
