  1. The growth and expansion of tree roots can cause damage to houses, buildings and structures with shallow foundations such as retaining walls, monuments, sculptures, sidewalks, driveways and paved roads. Roots can also enter onto cracked drains and sewers causing damage, blockage and disruption of the service. Tree roots spread radially in all possible directions where the soil conditions are favorable around the tree trunk.  About 90% of the total roots supporting the tree growth in the soil near surface at approximately 60cm depth and can grow deep up to ~3m. The roots can extent from the trunk out up to 2-3 times the height of the tree depending on the soil fertility. The main structural roots are located in the upper 30cm with larger diameter near the trunk.

  2. Geophysics HM Ltd offers a variety of non-invasive geophysical techniques for mapping the tree root systems. Ground penetrating radar provides three dimensional images of the tree roots position, depth and the relationship with the nearby structures and services. This information is very important for managing and mitigating the damage to both the tree and the structures.
